A Silent Shout Out

When I was in the seventh grade, we learned some basics of American Sign Language (ASL).

My then-teacher, Mrs. Mildred Wolford whom I absolutely adored, was fluent because her daughter was hearing impaired.

Not only did we learn the alphabet and the lyrics of several popular song but also, of course, all Mass responses as any good Catholic school children would do, natch.

Years later when I met my friends Lizzie and Stephen (both wildly brilliant and completely articulate in and masterful at ASL, having been educated at Gallaudet University), I couldn't help but notice that they wisely taught their hearing son many, many signs from the time he was a little baby. Did I mention he is a gifted chip off the ol' block of wisdom? I digress.

My two favorite signs are, probably unsurprisingly, those for "I Love You" and "Thank You" (which I'm attempting to emulate in the photo here).

And, because I've had my share of figurative beat downs lately (yeeoww!), I am choosing to focus instead on those people in my life who are constantly a source of support, strength, cheer and comfort. I'm shunning the bad and embracing the good; silently shouting my deepest gratitude.
