Eras have a way of taking the original definition of a word and completely turning it on its ear. Okay, words don't have ears but you get the gist. Here a few examples of terms that have transformed connotations quite dramatically from their rough inception (or at least, their long-held universal meanings) to today: AWFUL - did you know that this was once a positive word expressing majesty? Today, we'd say AWESOME or AWE INSPIRING for what was long ago considered AWFUL. SPINSTER - logically, this originally referred to those who made their livings spinning thread into yarn into wool; not an old, sternly, unmarried female. HUSSY - ironically, this was once an interchangeable term for the woman of the household or its mistress. Hmm; well, I guess hussy and mistress are still somewhat synonymous today? The more things change and all... NAUGHTY - this once reflected naught...that is to say, having very little or next to nothing. Well, I think we can all agree that Santa forever altered what it means to be on someone's NAUGHTY list. Again, I suppose those peeps wind up with lumps of coal or next to nothing in their Christmas stockings, so maybe this one's done a full 360. CHILL - to me, this is one of the biggies. While it still means cold or uncomfortably cool, it also now conjures the mental image of someone being super casual and calm. It can be used as an adjective to describe someone relaxed; a verb describing activity ("We're just chillin' at home tonight"); or a noun describing a state of being, as in "Patty's so chill." Except that relaxing and being calm are not two of PK's strong suits. In fact, I'm sure that statement has been made by no one. Ever. You can't be a neurotic worry, workaholic, finger-gnawing people pleaser AND chill all at once. At least, not easily, Capisce? So, while I AM acutely aware of the formal descriptor of chill, the latter-most is just a little something I'm working on one deep breath at a time. #LetThingsGo #Namaste #PutItInGodsHands
